ternational travel can expose children and adults to health risks that aren’t typically encountered at home. Spring Valley Pediatrics provides comprehensive travel health consultations and travel immunizations for our patients and their family members.

Before your trip, we’ll review your itinerary, destinations, planned activities, medical history, and vaccination status to help determine what precautions may be appropriate. Our goal is to help you and your family travel safely and confidently.

Comprehensive Pre-Travel Health Consultations

Travel health recommendations can vary considerably depending on where you’re going, how long you’ll be there, and what you’ll be doing.

During your travel consultation, our providers can:

  • Review your specific travel itinerary and destinations
  • Review routine immunizations and recommend updates when needed
  • Discuss vaccines recommended for your destination
  • Provide destination-specific health and safety counseling
  • Discuss food and water precautions
  • Review mosquito- and insect-borne disease risks
  • Discuss other health considerations relevant to your destination
  • Recommend and prescribe appropriate travel medications when warranted

Because some vaccines require multiple doses or need time to provide protection, we recommend contacting our office as early as possible before international travel.

Travel Vaccines Available at Spring Valley Pediatrics

Depending on your destination, itinerary, age, vaccination history, and individual health considerations, we may recommend one or more travel vaccines.

Typhoid fever can be a concern for travelers visiting certain areas where exposure through contaminated food or water is possible. We can determine whether typhoid vaccination is appropriate based on your destination and travel plans.

Pre-exposure rabies vaccination may be recommended for certain international travelers, particularly when travel plans could increase the likelihood of animal exposure or when access to prompt medical treatment may be limited.

Japanese encephalitis vaccination may be recommended for some travelers to parts of Asia and the Western Pacific depending on destination, length of stay, season, and planned activities.

Spring Valley Pediatrics is certified by the DC Department of Health to administer the Yellow Fever vaccine. When vaccination is appropriate, we can administer the vaccine and provide the required vaccination certificate for international travel.

Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne illness found in certain parts of the world. We can discuss current destination-specific risks and whether Chikungunya vaccination should be considered for your trip.

Routine Vaccinations Are Part of Travel Planning Too

International travel is also a good opportunity to make sure routine vaccinations are current. Depending on the traveler and destination, we’ll review existing immunization records and identify routine vaccines that may need to be updated before departure.

Destination-Specific Travel Advice

Travel medicine involves more than vaccinations.

Our providers will review the specific locations on your itinerary and discuss health considerations relevant to those destinations. When appropriate, we can also prescribe medications to bring with you based on your destination, medical needs, and anticipated risks.

Recommendations are individualized because two families traveling to the same country may have very different needs depending on where they stay, the length of the trip, activities planned, and the ages and health of the travelers.
